When it comes to commencing and launching sports betting in Ohio, each step is crucial.

The bill HB29 became law shortly before Christmas. Thus, sports betting is now legally permissible in Ohio, with a planned debut date of January 1, 2023.

During Wednesday’s Ohio Casino Control Agency (OCCC) meeting, Executive Director Matthew Schuler announced that the commission would release a uniform start date for sports betting at its next meeting on June 1. He also stated that the commencement date will be near or on January 1, 2023, as state law requires.

The state date will be soon out for all stakeholders in writing and published simultaneously on the commission’s web page.

Schuler’s revelation comes just a week after state Sen. Kirk Schuring, one of the bill’s authors, informed a local radio station that “we will have everything running in the middle to late fall.”

On the radio broadcast, Schuring said he met with Schuler lately and was informed: “they’re working together with a plan that we can all follow to make sure that we’re moving as soon as possible.”

“I still hope sports gambling will be permissible in the late fall, around the World Series,” state Sen. Niraj Antani informed the Dayton Daily News last week.

What steps has Ohio taken?

Senate Bill 176 was put-forth in May 2021. Also, a series of sessions were held promptly, with a deadline of June 30 for enactment.

After a slew of revisions, the bill became HB 29, which was sent to the Senate and adopted the next day. Many in Ohio hoped that betting would be lawful before football season. Sadly, politicians missed the 30th June deadline. Therefore, the date has been pushed back until the fall.

The bill was put forth to the full House and Senate and passed 72-12, with Governor DeWine passing it into law in late 2021. Following that, the OCCC announced the first set of gambling rules in January, with many involved predicting that sports betting in Ohio would begin on January 1, 2023.

With everything ready, why the delay?

Gov. Mike DeWine put forth the bill HB29 into law, making sports betting legal in Ohio for the first time. Unfortunately, even though it came shortly before Christmas, it is still not operational in Ohio.

According to Rick Anthony, the likely launch date in Ohio is January 1, 2023, deputy executive director of the Ohio Casino Control Commission. The commission may finish all essential processes for market debut by January 1, 2023.

Despite the OCCC’s publication of the first draft betting rules, January 1, 2023, remains the most likely start date.

Applications will be available soon

Ohio has not yet finalized applications for the nine types of licenses it will give. However, it has set up three license openings during which requests can be made.

Starting June 15, Ohio will begin accepting applications for the following positions for 30 days:

  • There are up to 25 sportsbooks available online (Type-A licenses)
  • Moreover, up to 40 retail sportsbooks, 11 pro sports locations, four casinos, and eleven racinos. (Type-B licenses)
  • Type-C licenses for sports-kiosk owners will use the Ohio Lottery Commission to run betting kiosks in bars and restaurants.
  • Type-A and Type-B license holders will work with initial-designated mobile managing service operators to make sports bets.
  • Equipment manufacturers for sports betting.

The next application window opens on July 15 for the following positions:

  • Second-designated MMSPs or service providers are looking to form a second partnership with a Type-A online operator to accept sports bets.
  • Type-C sports gaming servers are eateries and bars that already do business with the Ohio Lottery and wish to add up to two sports gambling kiosks.

A third licensing opportunity for sportsbook personnel will open 60 days before Ohio’s “universal start date” for online gambling.

“Ohio is undergoing the biggest gaming expansion in its history and the biggest ever rollout of sports gaming in the United States,” according to a FAQ on the commission’s webpage.” As a result, all eligible online applications, physical premises sportsbooks, and stores in bars and taverns are available to begin on the exact same date.”

“If industry estimates are correct, extensive due diligence investigations and ensuring compliance obligations for around 3,000 applications will be essential in time for the Universal Start Date.”

Expensive to Miss the Majority of the NFL Season

Considering two NFL teams in Ohio, the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals, many hoped that sports betting would be available during the season. However, it appears that the season is coming to a close.

Several Week 17 games will take place on Sunday, January 1. Whereas most of the Week 18 games are in the following week. On January 2, the Bengals face the Buffalo Bills, who are the betting favorites to win the Super Bowl, and the Baltimore Ravens on January 8. Also, on January 8, the Browns take on their fiercest rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Super Bowl, the most important sporting event, will occur in Glendale, Arizona, on February 12, 2023.

Where will the wagering take place?

While Ohio residents are still unable to gamble on sports in their home state, it is uncertain how many sportsbooks will be accessible once betting is lawful.

Sportsbooks like BetMGM, DraftKings, and Caesars Sportsbook OH can be among Ohio’s leading sports betting apps. on the launch day, Since 21 of the permissible 25 license holders may associate with up to two operators, Ohio’s law supports up to 46 online sportsbooks. Only one license can be contracted by the other four.

Casinos, racetracks, and professional sports teams can all apply. However, they must all have a physical premises license, with a limit of 40. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Browns have already teamed with Fubo Gaming and Bally Bet.

Schuler will divulge the specific date at the commission’s next meeting in June. Four of Ohio’s five border states will gladly accept their wagers and tax dollars. Betting on sports is lawful in Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
